The 2nd Annual Tallahassee Wildlife Festival is honored to present

Ira Sullivan, one of the true jazz greats of our time,

at the Wild Thing Gala, May 13th, 2005.

Ira Sullivan is a world-class multi-instrumentalist who plays trumpet, flute, flugelhorn and tenor, alto and soprano saxes. Sullivan was a vital part of the Chicago 1950s jazz scene, playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Lester Young, Wardell Gray and Roy Eldridge and earning a reputation as a fearsome bebop soloist.

When Sullivan moved south to Florida, he played with local Miami greats such as Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Joe Diorio, Tony Castellano, Steve Bagby, Wally Cirillo and vocalist, Carmen Lundy. Working with young musicians at the University of Miami Jazz School led to teaching and to a broadening of his own musical roots to include the lessons of John Coltrane's music and elements of jazz rock.

In 1980, Sullivan moved to New York and formed a quintet with legendary trumpeter Red Rodney.

Today, while based in Miami, Ira tours extensively on the international jazz circuit and is a clinician, lecturer and a judiciator in jazz workshops at university and high school programs. He initiated the "History of Jazz" school programs in 1960, now widely appreciated by many. A five-time Grammy nominee, he also serves as a panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts.
